Evernote allows you to connect many devices (laptop – tablet – phone) to a common account which both stores information “on the cloud” and syncs notes to local storage on each device on an as needed basis.

It enables the creation of a two tiered folder structure where notes can be organized and can further incorporate attached files, webpages, and screen shots.

In the early 90’s the world of motion picture editing was revolutionized by the release of computer editing systems. Pieces of film no longer needed to be physically joined, instead digitized material could be electronically linked … this drastically accelerated the editorial process. This process was touted as being new and “non-linear” which implied that prior systems had been fully linear. But this was hardly true …. Scenes were rarely shot in exact sequence, and editors were compiling sections of work in a non-linear fashion all of the time. New tools made the process more efficient, but the process was generally the same.

Web based information invariably contains links, and links enables and encourages the “audience” to move freely along any continuum they choose making it impossible to demand a set progression through concepts and facts. Just as it is tempting to say that just as the invention of digital editing was the first introduction of non-linear thought into the creative process, the introduction of web links is sometimes described as the genesis of non-linear consumption … but it has always been nearly impossible to dictate how an audience consumes what is presented.

The reality of non-linear consumption is why books contain both a table of contents and an index, why people like to listen to pieces of music and watch movies over and over, and why a DVR contains rewind and fast forwarding functionality. Generally speaking, the human mind prefers a non-linear process, and the link is merely a wonderful innovation that addresses a paradigm that has always existed.
